At about 30 miles long and 9 miles wide, Isla Cozumel, whose Mayan name translates as “Island of the Swallows,” has become a favorite for cruise ships as well as a point of interest for divers, as it is one of the best diving sites in the world, with reef walls that plunge to incredible depths.
It is located 45 minutes by ferry from Playa del Carmen. It is one of the places with the most tradition and history in the entire Mexican Caribbean, since Cozumel had important settlements, temples, government buildings and commercial ports since the time of the ancient Mayans.
As one of our top 5 islands to visit in the Riviera Maya, the largest island in the Mexican Caribbean and the third largest in the country, Isla Cozumel is located at the tip of the peninsula, very close to Playa del Carmen.
It is home to a great diversity of birds and vegetation. The eastern part is bordered by rugged limestone cliffs and a very open ocean, meaning plenty of waves more suitable for surfing than swimming.
